OKTOBERFEST "Treated Like Movie Stars"by William A. Cummins
Ann and I arrived at the Comfort Inn in Bellefontaine, Ohio, on Sunday October 16th and settled in to prepare for the"OKTOBERFEST OF THE WEST." We met with the Holland Theatre board members on Monday evening to review the events scheduled for Saturday the 22nd. This event kicked-off the million dollar fundraiser for Theatre renovations.
During the week we met with radio, newspaper, and other media while several schools announced the event through their PA systems. On Thursday evening I performed trick-roping for youths at the Marmon Valley Farm. On Saturday morning Ann and I had fun judging a beauty pageant of young cowboys and cowgirls. Since Daryl Rittenour from the Rittenour Equine Center loaned me his personal palomino, Midas, I asked him to join me in leading the downtown horse parade on Saturday. After the horse parade I performed trick-roping on the stage at the Holland Theatre with Ann as my roping partner. By now you are asking, "Why all the fuss? What was OKTOBERFEST all about?"
Well, you can place the blame on another 'dream.' In 1998 a sixth grade teacher, Kristine Swisher, explained to her class, "They have decided to tear down our beautiful Holland Theatre." This kicked off a huge dream when the kids asked, " Why don't we save it?" It's amazing that those five words and some sixth grade letter writing saved the Holland.
To help you understand how gorgeous the Holland Theatre really is, a photo description is shown below. Our goal of 8 to 10 million dollars will complete the restoration and create an endowment for generations. These funds are riding on the back of the book, "KING and the COWBOY." Get you copy today!
